Use of Shadows:

One of the best ways to focus the audience's attention on the subject is to use light and shadows. The lightened area will draw the focus away from the darkened area. So if you want to draw attention to the subject, light it and surround it with shadows.

Tip: In some classic movies a streak of light was put across the actors' eyes. This added light would help draw attention to their eyes.
